Owners Rating:
The Bull Run is JS Industries' step-down fun board, developed with Mark Occhilupo and built around a wide, full nose and a low/moderate to low rocker that keeps speed coming in weak surf. A single concave under the front foot runs into a moderate double forward of the fins for lift and quick rail to rail transition, while a pulled in round tail carried over from the Raging Bull holds drive when a section stands up. Medium to low rails over a flatter deck keep the volume underfoot without dulling the response, giving it some of the glide of a mid-length in a much shorter outline. It comes stock as a five fin and runs from 5'6 to 7'0, aimed at flatter faced waves but usable as a go-to board up to head high.

Under Your Feet

Paddles like a board a size longer, and the wide nose sits up out of the water rather than tripping when you commit to a turn. It carries speed across flat sections without asking you to pump for it, and the round tail gives you something solid to lean on, so it holds where a wide outline usually washes out. There is a lot of foam underfoot and it takes a session or two to work out where to stand, but once you find it the board is easy without feeling dull.

When it's pumping

  • The round tail holds through a proper rail turn, so it does not come apart when a section finally stands up.
  • Good to about head high, and it still gets into the pocket despite the width up front.
  • Steep and bowly is where it runs out, it was never meant to draw tight lines in hollow surf.

When it's fair

  • This is home. It keeps generating speed through dead sections instead of bogging down in them.
  • The paddle power gets you into waves early and from further out, which does most of the work on gutless days.
  • Stiff upright fins wake it up noticeably once the surf goes properly small.
