Owners Rating:
The Sub Driver 3.0 Swallow is a small wave performance shortboard, built around a deep single concave that runs to double and finishes in vee behind the rear fin. It's narrower and a bit more high performance than its older brother the Sub Driver 2.0. Low tail rocker and generous width get it moving early, while the set-back wide point and hip between the back foot give it a fulcrum to turn off anywhere on the wave. The swallow trims surface area for grip and pivot without killing the speed. Designed to be ridden 1 to 2 inches shorter and noticeably wider than a Driver 3.0, it suits intermediate to advanced surfers who want to keep surfing a performance board in average conditions.

Under Your Feet

It feels like a shortboard that stopped making excuses about the waves. The hip under your back foot gives you an obvious place to pivot from, so turns happen where you decide rather than where the board allows. Steady underfoot, with the vee out the back doing quiet work you notice mostly by its absence of drama.

When it's pumping

  • Handles a punchy day fine, though the low tail rocker means you're steering it through a steep section rather than riding it through.
  • The vee keeps it from getting squirrelly at speed, which is more useful than it sounds.
  • Don't expect it to work as well as a Driver if the waves have some power.

When it's fair

  • This is the whole reason it exists. Knee to chest high slop and it's still generating speed off the back foot.
  • Wide enough to skate over dead patches, narrow enough that you're not embarrassed to be seen on it.
